After reading this article discussing the Senate's movement against Planned Parenthood, I've decided to put my thoughts into words.
To truly understand and come to consensus around an issue, there must be respect, communication, empathy, and understanding for those opposed as much as for those in agreement. All sides of an argument must be heard, and compromise is the oil needed to make the complex machine of government operate effectively.
Free, safe, preventative health care is an individual and private issue that applies to the safety and well-being of ALL people, and should not be under attack by a wealthy and privileged elite that refuses empathy for any opinion or lifestyle that doesn't mirror their own. Whether fueled by ideology, rising national debt, or personal ignorance, a lack of compassion and comprehension from those in charge of nourishing the public good has fragmented the American political system.
I don't dislike people who oppose abortion. Everyone has their own opinions and ideologies, and that should be respected. However, I dislike people who decide their opinion is the ONLY OPINION that matters, and who feel hating on other's individual choices is going to make others change to fit their narrow mold of how they think society "should be". Some people need the presence of abortion and preventative health care, and others don't. Another person's life choices isn't my business as much as my choices aren't the business of another. Take responsibility for your own life and respect the decisions of others to be responsible individuals themselves.
If someone passed a law outlawing the growth of beards, there would be an uproar. How can you possibly outlaw something that defines that individual's personal expression, wants, and needs? While a silly example, it touches on a deeper issue concerning individual rights. I am a young woman, and like many other young women in this nation, I would like to think that I am in control of myself and my well-being. But if that control is snatched away by some far-away institution that can't possibly relate to me on this personal of a level, then how can I feel safe going through life as a dedicated American and an individual? The right to a safe and legal abortion and preventative health care is not the choice of a far-off Senator, but is the choice of the expecting mother who never wanted pregnancy in the first place; who possibly isn't yet financially, mentally, or physically apt to handle children and childbirth; or who is at risk of rape or sexual abuse without this basic health care.
All of the time and energy put into something that defies the rights of others, and that spits on other peoples' own personal business simply for having that business in the first place, is time and energy that would be better spent creating greater opportunity for everyone to achieve the privileges of happiness and safety they are worthy of. By doing so, we can create a safer environment where everyone can flourish in their individual, protected freedoms. I hope for the sake of every person who benefits from the services of Planned Parenthood and like organizations that they will receive the health care they rightfully deserve from a government that chooses to support the public need above their own agenda. By creating a comfortable and free country where all may live with their personal, natural rights intact, government can work smoothly and effectively toward making this world a safer place to live in.
